The objective of this abstract is to analyze the use of biomedical signals (specifically electromyographic (EMG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) signals) for diagnostic and research purposes in patients with Huntington’s disease. The paper presents a brief historical overview of the discovery of electrophysiological signals, while also introducing fundamental definitions and concepts in the field of biomedical engineering. Subsequently, it addresses key physiological aspects underlying the muscular and nervous systems, with the primary aim of illustrating the mechanisms that enable the acquisition of electrophysiological signals. The main concepts of the systems for acquiring, processing, and interpreting the signals of interest are introduced, highlighting their specific characteristics. Finally, Huntington’s disease is discussed. After presenting its main pathophysiological characteristics, causes, and symptoms, the alterations observable in electromyographic and electroencephalographic signals are analyzed by comparing healthy subjects with those affected by the disease.
L’obiettivo di questo elaborato è analizzare l’utilizzo di segnali biomedici, nello specifico dei segnali elettromiografico (EMG) ed elettroencefalografico (EEG), a fini diagnostici e di ricerca nei pazienti affetti dalla malattia di Huntington. L'elaborato presenta una breve trattazione storica sulla scoperta di segnali elettrofisiologici, introducendo inoltre definizioni e concetti fondamentali sullo studio dell’ingegneria biomedica. Successivamente, si trattano importanti aspetti fisiologici che risiedono alla base del sistema muscolare e del sistema nervoso, con lo scopo principale di illustrare i meccanismi che consentono l’acquisizione dei segnali elettrofisiologici. Vengono introdotti i concetti principali dei sistemi di acquisizione, elaborazione e interpretazione dei segnali di nostro interesse, evidenziandone le specifiche caratteristiche. Infine, si tratta della malattia di Huntington. Dopo averne presentato le caratteristiche fisiopatologiche principali, le cause e la sintomatologia, vengono analizzate le alterazioni osservabili nei segnali elettromiografici ed elettroencefalografici mediante il confronto tra soggetti sani e soggetti affetti dalla patologia.
