Since the 1990s, grapevine yellows have represented one of the major threats to European viticulture. Among them, Flavescence dorata is particularly important because of its high virulence and the severe economic and production losses it causes. The disease, caused by Candidatus Phytoplasma vitis, presents a significant challenge due to its latent phase, during which infected plants can serve as a source of inoculum before exhibiting visible symptoms. As field diagnosis still relies primarily on visual inspection, infected vines are often identified only after symptom expression, allowing the phytoplasma to spread unnoticed. Recent advances in diagnostic technologies have led to the development of rapid, reliable, and increasingly affordable tools capable of detecting the pathogen during the incubation or latent phase of infection. The implementation of these techniques could enable the early identification of infection foci and the prompt removal of infected plants, thereby reducing disease spread within vineyards. The present study aimed to assess the level of awareness and dissemination of modern diagnostic technologies for Flavescence dorée among grape growers, as well as their willingness to adopt these tools in vineyard management. In addition, the perceived importance of the disease and its geographical distribution were investigated to characterize its spatial incidence and provide a basis for future analyses of the relationships between disease occurrence and climatic, topographical, and agronomic factors. To this end, a voluntary and anonymous questionnaire was administered to grape growers operating in the province of Treviso, with particular emphasis on the northern area of the Prosecco DOCG production zone. The collected responses were analyzed to evaluate growers' knowledge of the disease, their interest in adopting innovative diagnostic tools, and the perceived distribution and incidence of Flavescence dorée across the study area.
Dagli anni ’90, i giallumi della vite rappresentano una delle principali minacce per la viticoltura europea; tra questi, la Flavescenza dorata si distingue per l’elevata virulenza e per il forte impatto economico e produttivo. La malattia, causata da Candidatus Phytoplasma vitis, presenta una criticità significativa legata alla sua fase asintomatica: le piante infette possono infatti risultare contagiose già nelle prime fasi dell’infezione, pur senza manifestare sintomi evidenti. Poiché la diagnosi avviene ancora prevalentemente tramite osservazione visiva in campo, gli interventi vengono spesso attuati tardivamente, favorendo la diffusione silenziosa del fitoplasma. L’evoluzione delle tecnologie diagnostiche ha tuttavia introdotto strumenti più rapidi, affidabili ed economicamente accessibili, capaci di individuare la presenza del patogeno anche durante il periodo d’incubazione. L’impiego di tali metodologie potrebbe consentire un’identificazione precoce dei focolai infettivi e una loro più tempestiva eliminazione, contribuendo a limitare la diffusione della malattia nei vigneti. La presente tesi si propone di indagare la diffusione extra-accademica delle moderne tecniche diagnostiche per la Flavescenza dorata, valutando al contempo la disponibilità all’utilizzo da parte dei viticoltori. Parallelamente, viene analizzata la percezione dell’intensità della problematica e la sua distribuzione territoriale, con l’obiettivo di delineare una mappa di severità relativa all’incidenza della malattia e porre le basi per future correlazioni con fattori climatici, topografici e pratiche agronomiche. Per il raggiungimento di tali obiettivi è stato somministrato un questionario a compilazione volontaria a viticoltori operanti nella parte settentrionale della provincia di Treviso, con particolare concentrazione nell’area delle colline del Prosecco DOCG. Le risposte raccolte sono state successivamente analizzate ed elaborate al fine di ottenere una panoramica sul livello di diffusione della problematica e sull’interesse verso l’adozione di strumenti diagnostici innovativi.
