The present thesis examines the relationship between mind wandering (MW) and road safety, with the aim of systematically organizing the available evidence on the factors that modulate its onset and consequences during the driving task. The first chapter illustrates the cognitive complexity of driving, analysing its attentional demands, perceptual biases, and main error categories. ADAS and ADS automation systems are then introduced and their impact on the driver’s cognitive system is discussed. The second part of the chapter focuses on the main theoretical conceptualizations of MW, by examining perceptual decoupling as the distinctive cognitive mechanism of the phenomenon, alongside its relationship with meta-awareness and task familiarity. The second chapter presents the systematic literature review, conducted following PRISMA and PRISMA-S guidelines with selection criteria defined through the PECO model, resulting in the inclusion of 38 studies organised around human factors, vehicle factors, and environmental factors. The results, interpreted in the third chapter, document the prevalence of MW during monotonous driving, the role of intrusive thoughts and negative mood on crash risk, the greater magnitude of performance decrements associated with unintentional MW, and the specific criticality of Level 3 conditional automation. The conclusions point towards interventions focused on infrastructural adaptation, enhanced driver training, and improved public communication on MW. Future research directions indicate the need for naturalistic longitudinal paradigms and the extension of studied populations, with priority given to professional drivers.
La presente tesi esamina la relazione tra il mind wandering (MW) e la sicurezza stradale, con l'obiettivo di organizzare sistematicamente le evidenze disponibili attorno ai fattori che ne modulano l'insorgenza e le conseguenze durante il compito di guida. Il primo capitolo illustra la complessità cognitiva della guida, analizzandone le richieste attentive, i bias percettivi e le principali categorie di errore, per poi introdurre i sistemi di automazione ADAS e ADS e il loro impatto sul conducente. La seconda parte del capitolo presenta il MW nelle sue principali concettualizzazioni teoriche, approfondendo il disaccoppiamento percettivo come meccanismo cognitivo distintivo del fenomeno, insieme al rapporto con la meta-consapevolezza e la familiarità con l’attività. Il secondo capitolo espone la revisione sistematica della letteratura, condotta secondo le linee guida PRISMA e PRISMA-S con criteri di selezione definiti tramite il modello PECO, che ha portato all'inclusione di 38 studi organizzati attorno ai fattori umani, ai fattori del veicolo e ai fattori ambientali. I risultati, interpretati nel terzo capitolo, documentano la prevalenza del MW durante la guida monotona, il ruolo dei pensieri intrusivi e dell'umore negativo sul rischio incidentale, la maggiore entità dei decrementi nelle prestazioni associati al MW non intenzionale e la criticità specifica dell'automazione condizionale di Livello 3. Le conclusioni orientano verso interventi sull’adeguamento infrastrutturale, approfondita formazione e migliore comunicazione pubblica sul MW. Le prospettive di ricerca future indicano la necessità di paradigmi longitudinali naturalistici e dell'estensione delle popolazioni studiate, con priorità ai conducenti professionali.
