The thesis addresses the study of the voice from a bioengineering perspective, analysing the process of voice production and the possible use of the vocal signal as a source of information in the biomedical field. After describing the main anatomical and physiological aspects of phonation, the thesis considers the biomechanical models that describe the behaviour of the vocal folds and the interaction between vibrating tissues and aerodynamic flow. The voice is then treated as a biomedical signal, with reference to the main acoustic parameters used to characterise it, such as fundamental frequency, intensity, spectrum, jitter, shimmer, and other parameters related to voice quality. These measures make it possible to quantitatively describe alterations in voice production that may occur in different pathological conditions. Particular attention is devoted to the study of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, in which alterations of voice and speech may represent indicators of motor and neuromuscular impairments. The aim of the thesis is to show how acoustic voice analysis, integrated with physiological and biomechanical knowledge of phonation, may constitute a non-invasive tool to support the identification and monitoring of neurological disorders.
