This thesis examines the phenomenon of social and political radicalism through the sociology of culture. The work is structured around two main chapters. The first analyses the Civil Sphere Theory developed by Jeffrey C. Alexander, focusing on his definition of cultural sociology as a development beyond Parsonian functionalism, on the theory of the civil sphere as an autonomous space in which symbolic codes shape processes of inclusion and exclusion, and on the redefinition of radicalism as any organised effort to breach the civil order, regardless of its ideological content. The second chapter examines Shmuel N. Eisenstadt's account of the relationship between modernity and barbarism, as interpreted by Andrea Maccarini, who draws out its potential for a cultural sociology of radicalism. Eisenstadt's central argument — that modern barbarism results from a cultural imbalance among the constitutive dimensions of collective identity — is brought into dialogue with Alexander's perspective, highlighting points of convergence and divergence between the two approaches. The overall aim is to contribute to the construction of an analytical framework for the study of radicalism in contemporary societies.
