Adaptogenic plants are used in phytotherapy primarily to counteract the negative effects of stress. The term adaptogen refers to substances able to increase the body's resistance to stress in a non specific manner. In addition to their traditional applications, recent decades have highlighted a potential use of these plants in the field of sports performance, with the aim of improving endurance, strength, and athletic performance, as well as reducing fatigue and promoting faster recovery. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the use of adaptogens plants in this context. In particular, the focus is on Rhodiola rosea L., Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, and Eleutherococcus senticosus (Rupr. et Maxim.). The sources were obtained from PubMed and Google Scholar using keywords such as: plant adaptogens, Rhodiola rosea, Panax ginseng, Eleutherococcus senticosus, stress, and sport. Studies published between 2006 and 2026 were considered. To assess the effectiveness of these plants in the sports field, the main parameters evaluated include blood biomarkers, different types of training, recovery modalities, and perceived pain. The studies analyzed revealed several major limitations related to the dosage administered, treatment duration and formulation type, as well as issues concerning the number and characteristics of participants involved in the studies. Therefore, further research will be necessary taking these factors into account.
Le piante adattogene sono utilizzate in fitoterapia per contrastare soprattutto gli effetti negativi dello stress. Il termine adattogeno fa riferimento alle sostanze studiate per il possibile effetto sulla resistenza dell’organismo allo stress in modo non-specifico. Oltre alle tradizionali applicazioni di tali piante, negli ultimi decenni è stato evidenziato un possibile utilizzo in ambito sportivo per aumentare la resistenza, la forza e la performance sportiva e anche per ridurre la fatica e permettere un recupero più veloce. L’obiettivo di questa tesi è validare o meno l’utilizzo delle piante adattogene in questo ambito. In particolare sono prese in esame Rhodiola rosea L., Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer e Eleutherococcus senticosus (Rupr. et Maxim). Le fonti provengono da Pubmed e da Google Scholar attraverso parole chiave quali: plant adaptogens, rhodiola rosea, panax ginseng, eleutherococcus senticosus, stress, sport. Gli studi sono stati considerati secondo un range temporale 2006-2026. Per la valutazione dell’efficacia delle piante in ambito sportivo sono stati considerati principalmente parametri sanguigni, diversi tipi di allenamento, modalità di recupero e dolore percepito. Dagli studi analizzati le principali problematiche emerse sono relative alla dose somministrata, la durata ed il tipo di formulazione; oltre che alle complicazioni relative al numero e al tipo di individui coinvolti negli studi. Sarà quindi necessario procedere con ulteriori studi considerando questi fattori.
