This thesis focuses on the study and selection of materials for the construction of roll cages used in rally cars, with the aim of identifying solutions that ensure high mechanical performance and maximum structural safety. The work is based on an in-depth analysis of existing scientific literature, through the review of academic articles and technical publications in the field of metallic materials. In particular, the main materials used in roll cage construction have been examined, with attention to their mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, ductility, toughness, and fatigue behavior. The analysis also considers aspects related to manufacturability, weldability, and compliance with current regulations in the motorsport sector. The results highlight that material selection represents a trade-off between strength, weight, and energy absorption capacity in the event of an impact. Among the analyzed materials, certain high-strength alloy steels show particularly suitable performance for the intended application. In conclusion, this thesis provides a comparative framework useful for selecting the most suitable materials for roll cages, contributing to the design of safer and more efficient structures.
La presente tesi affronta lo studio e la selezione dei materiali per la realizzazione di roll cage destinati ad auto da rally, con l’obiettivo di individuare soluzioni che garantiscano elevate prestazioni meccaniche e massima sicurezza strutturale. Il lavoro si basa su un’analisi approfondita della letteratura scientifica esistente, attraverso la revisione di articoli accademici e pubblicazioni tecniche nel campo dei materiali metallici. In particolare, sono stati esaminati i principali materiali utilizzati nella costruzione di roll cage, con attenzione alle loro proprietà meccaniche, quali resistenza a trazione, duttilità, tenacità e comportamento a fatica. L’analisi ha considerato anche aspetti legati alla lavorabilità, alla saldabilità e alla conformità alle normative vigenti nel settore automobilistico sportivo. I risultati ottenuti evidenziano come la scelta del materiale rappresenti un compromesso tra resistenza, peso e capacità di assorbimento dell’energia in caso di impatto. Tra i materiali analizzati, alcuni acciai legati ad alta resistenza mostrano prestazioni particolarmente adatte all’applicazione in esame. In conclusione, la tesi fornisce un quadro comparativo utile alla selezione dei materiali più idonei per roll cage, contribuendo alla progettazione di strutture più sicure ed efficienti.
