This investigation aimed to examine grain size distribution and channel geometry (width and depth trends) along the terminal section of the river Fiora, located in northern Lazio (Italy). This river was chosen for the investigation because this type of study is generally conducted on large rivers affected by mesotidal or macrotidal regimes, whereas smaller scale, microtidal systems have not been as extensively analysed. Additionally, as opposed to many other rivers in Italy and Europe, the Fiora River has been left relatively laterally unmodified, in terms of levees, bed/bank revetment and straightening, except in its distalmost section near the town. A total of 44 samples for grain size analyses were recovered from the river banks and a detailed bathymetry map was obtained from a combination of GPS and sonar tools. The channel geometry investigation was complemented with use of satellite images. The results found that the Fiora’s changes in width and depth broadly agree with what is observed in larger scale systems, with seaward widening along the reach, and seaward deepening in the upstream section, followed by shallowing in the downstream section. The grain size trends were also in agreement, with coarser sediment at the upstream and downstream extremities of the reach, and finer sediment toward the middle. This study suggests that morpho-sedimentary models developed for larger-scale rivers influenced by macrotidal conditions can be broadly applied to smaller-scale systems affected by microtidal environments.

Abstract

Grain size distribution and channel geometry along the fluvial–tidal transition zone in a small-scale riverine system: the Fiora River (Italy)
