The simulation of tidal wave propagation in shallow water basins is a topic of significant interest with many hydraulic and environmental applications. The driving force of this problem is the sea level and its variation over time. In this thesis, a finite element model of a tidal basin was developed. A depth-integrated two-dimensional wave model was implemented, in which the velocity components are integrated over the vertical direction. The temporal and spatial variations of the free surface elevation and flow rates were investigated. The governing first-order differential equations are strongly nonlinear. The numerical model is based on the Galerkin finite element method for the spatial discretization and the explicit Euler method for the time integration. The practical application was carried out on simple computational meshes in order to better investigate the underlying hydraulic processes. The simulations exhibited stability issues due to the chosen pair of functional spaces and the explicit time discretization. Consequently, a spatial regularization of the free surface elevation was implemented, together with a reduction of the time step, yielding results that were consistent with the expected theoretical behavior.

Abstract
Consequently, a spatial regularization of the free surface elevation was implemented, together with a reduction of the time step, yielding results that were consistent with the expected theoretical behavior.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
