Un lato nascosto della modernità. Potere e libertà nell'opera di John Calhoun

This paper aims to analyse, using the methodology of the history of political discourse, the two main texts of Calhoun’s work, A Disquisition on Government and A Discourse on the Constitution and Government of the United States. The study attempts to interpret them not as separate contributions, but as parts of a single political action, which it seeks to account for in order to gauge the scope of Calhoun's contribution to the contemporary debate. In examining this political-textual activity, the focus is primarily on the concepts of power and freedom, which structure Calhoun’s proposal and guide its various levels of reasoning, as well as all other theoretical and practical constructs. Furthermore, the aim is to highlight how Calhoun’s proposal stands out as atypical and alternative to the canons of modern political science, and how it allows for a rethinking of certain assumptions of modern constitutionalism. From this perspective, Calhoun’s thought is interpreted as a possible “hidden side” of political modernity, and the work consequently also aims at a critical reappraisal of the US political system, its historiographical narrative, and its eclecticism

l presente lavoro si propone di analizzare, attraverso la metodologia della storia del discorso politico, i due principali testi dell’opera calhouniana, la Disquisition on Government e il Discourse on the Constitution and Government of the United States. Nell'elaborato si tenta di leggerli non come contributi separati, ma come parti di un’unica operazione politica, di cui si cerca di rendere conto per misurare la portata dell’intervento di Calhoun nel dibattito a lui contemporaneo. Nell’esame dell’azione politico-testuale si mettono a fuoco soprattutto i concetti di potere e libertà, che strutturano la proposta calhouniana e ne orientano i diversi livelli argomentativi, così come tutti gli altri costrutti teorico-pratici. Inoltre, si cerca di evidenziare come la proposta calhouniana si configuri come atipica e alternativa rispetto ai canoni della scienza politica moderna e come consenta di ripensare alcuni presupposti del costituzionalismo moderno. In questa prospettiva, il pensiero di Calhoun viene interpretato come un possibile “lato nascosto” della modernità politica e il lavoro mira anche, di riflesso, a una rilettura critica del sistema politico statunitense, della sua narrazione storiografica e del suo eclettismo.
