Bilingualism, whether social or individual, is a widespread phenomenon that has been extensively discussed in the literature regarding its psychological implications and linguistic competence. On this basis, this thesis aims to investigate the composition of the bilingual repertoire and how it is influenced by language policies and institutional support for the languages under analysis, while also considering social and individual identity components. To this end, a specifically structured form was administered to two equivalent samples of 100 participants living in the Balearic Islands and in the Veneto region, respectively. The study was designed to investigate language preferences, habits, domains of use, linguistic security, and perceived prestige regarding the languages in the repertoire: Catalan and Castilian for the citizens of the Balearic Islands, and the Venetian dialect and Italian for residents of the Veneto region. The results highlighted a strong maintenance of Catalan against Castilian and English, in contrast to the loss of domains of use for Venetian dialect in favor of Italian. This demonstrates how legal frameworks for language protection and the granting of official status have a significant impact on the survival and spread of a language and, consequently, on the composition of the bilingual linguistic repertoire.

Abstract
This demonstrates how legal frameworks for language protection and the granting of official status have a significant impact on the survival and spread of a language and, consequently, on the composition of the bilingual linguistic repertoire.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
