Il problema dell’idolatria in Esodo 20:4 e la sua ricezione nell’iconoclasmo della Prima Riforma Protestante

This thesis analyzes the prohibition of images in Exodus 20:4, focusing on the tension between Word and Image in the Christian tradition. In particular, it will analyze the previously cited biblical verse and its interpretation during the Early Protestant Reformation, when the centrality of the Word was reaffirmed and the role of images in religious practice was reconsidered. In this context, it will explore the moderate position of Martin Luther, who in his time distinguished between the legitimate use and the abuse of sacred images. This thesis highlights continuities and transformations in the relationship between faith, the divine's representation and revelation.

Questa tesi analizza il divieto delle immagini in Esodo 20:4, soffermandosi sulla tensione tra Parola e Immagine nella tradizione cristiana. In particolare, verrà analizzato il versetto biblico precedentemente citato e la sua interpretazione durante la prima Riforma Protestante, periodo in cui venne riaffermata la centralità della Parola e riconsiderato il ruolo delle immagini nella pratica religiosa. In questo contesto, verrà approfondita la posizione moderata di Martin Lutero, che al suo tempo distingueva l'uso legittimo e l'abuso delle immagini sacre. Questa tesi mette evidenzia così continuità e trasformazioni nel rapporto tra fede, rappresentazione del divino e rivelazione.
