My thesis offers an analysis of the film 4 luni, 3 săptămâni și 2 zile (2007) a work that, by winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, established the Romanian director Cristian Mungiu on both the international and European cinematic scene. Beyond its significance for the filmmaker’s individual career, this recognition also confirmed the importance of what has been described as the “miracle” of Romanian cinema, following decades marked by limited or non-existent production and by the marginal relevance of Romanian films outside the national context. The aim of this study is, on the one hand, to highlight the continuity of Mungiu’s “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” with the defining features of the Romanian New Wave, from its so-called realist poetics to its minimalist style; on the other hand, it seeks to examine the implications of this positioning in relation to the historical context evoked by the film. The first section introduces the historical, socio-political, and cinematic framework that preceded the emergence of the Romanian New Wave. It then focuses on the movement’s main characteristics—its stylistic features and recurring themes—drawing on the studies of Doru Pop, Francesco Marzaduri, Dominique Nasta, and Dana Duma. The examination of the historical and political landscape of socialist Romania pays particular attention to the impact of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s pronatalist policies on women’s bodies and minds. A key reference book for this topic is Gail Kligman’s “The Politics of Duplicity: Controlling Reproduction in Ceaușescu’s Romania” (1998). The second section focuses on Cristian Mungiu’s biography and filmography, highlighting the director’s tendency to draw inspiration from real-life events while combining this approach with the aesthetic principles of the Romanian New Wave. After outlining the film’s production context, the textual analysis—conducted through the examination of individual sequences as well as broader narrative and visual structures—demonstrates how Mungiu, by employing the cinematic techniques characteristic of Romanian New Wave aesthetics, succeeds in portraying, through the story of two young women, both the experiences of Romanian women under Nicolae Ceaușescu’s regime and the wider social consequences of a strategy of population control implemented through a pervasive system of surveillance and repression, of which Decree 770 of 1966 is one of its most significant manifestations.

Abstract

The Romania New Wave through "4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days" (2007) by Cristian Mungiu
