Il teatro come via di trasformazione: Jerzy Grotowski tra scena e pedagogia

This thesis analyses the figure of Jerzy Grotowski and his contribution to the history of theatre in the second half of the 20th century, with particular attention to the Poor Theatre and its theoretical and pedagogical legacy. By contextualising the relevant theatrical landscape and examining his main influences — in particular Stanislavski and Meyerhold — the work reconstructs the Polish director’s artistic and research journey. The thesis explores the fundamental principles of Poor Theatre and the central role attributed to the actor within the Teatr Laboratorium, highlighting the centrality of physical and vocal training as a tool for the actor’s self-exploration and transformation. It also analyses the process of stage creation, understood as the outcome of continuous research based on the removal of non-essential elements from the stage. Finally, the thesis examines the legacy of Grotowski’s thought in contemporary theatre and pedagogical practices, highlighting its potential educational applications. The aim is to highlight the relevance of his method today, both as an approach to actor training and as a model of theatrical research that remains influential to this day.

La presente tesi analizza la figura di Jerzy Grotowski e il suo contributo alla storia del teatro del secondo Novecento, con particolare attenzione al Teatro Povero e alla sua eredità teorica e pedagogica. Attraverso l’inquadramento del contesto teatrale di riferimento e lo studio delle principali influenze, in particolare Stanislavskij e Mejerchol’d, il lavoro ricostruisce il percorso artistico e di ricerca del regista polacco. L’elaborato approfondisce i principi fondamentali del Teatro Povero e il ruolo centrale attribuito all’attore all’interno del Teatr Laboratorium, evidenziando la centralità del training fisico e vocale come strumento di indagine e trasformazione dell’attore stesso. Viene inoltre analizzato il processo di creazione scenica, inteso come esito di una ricerca continua basata sulla sottrazione degli elementi non essenziali della scena. Infine, la tesi prende in esame l’eredità del pensiero grotowskiano nel teatro contemporaneo e nelle pratiche pedagogiche, evidenziando le sue possibili applicazioni didattiche. L’obiettivo è mettere in luce l’attualità del suo metodo, sia come approccio alla formazione dell’attore sia come modello di ricerca teatrale ancora oggi influente.
