Dall'Arcano alla Forma: i Tarocchi come espressione di creatività visiva nell'opera di Niki de Saint Phalle e di Leonora Carrington

This thesis analyzes the iconographic and symbolic evolution of the tarot from its origins to the present day, with a particular focus on the 20th century and the reinterpretations that have taken place within the artistic sphere. The first chapter traces the history of the tarot, highlighting its cultural transformations and its transition from a recreational tool to an esoteric and artistic medium. The second chapter focuses on the Major Arcana, interpreted as universal archetypes in constant evolution, with a specific analysis of the theme of the female figure and the arcana that fall into this category. The third chapter is dedicated to the biography and artistic development of two artists who have contributed to the reinterpretation of the tarot in a modern key, highlighting the relationship between personal experience, artistic language, and esoteric symbolism. Finally, the fourth chapter offers a comparison of the use of the tarot in painting and sculpture, through the analysis of two emblematic cases: Leonora Carrington’s Surrealist tarot and Niki de Saint Phalle’s Tarot Garden, located in Capalbio, Tuscany. Through a historical-artistic and iconographic analysis, this thesis aims to demonstrate how the tarot, in the contemporary context, constitutes a complex cultural asset capable of combining symbolic, creative, and spatial dimensions, offering new perspectives for its preservation and promotion. The work is based on the analysis of two specific case studies presented in comparison and serves as a useful tool for understanding the transformations of society over the centuries, with particular reference to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

La presente tesi analizza l’evoluzione iconografica e simbolica dei tarocchi dalla loro nascita fino all’età contemporanea, con particolare attenzione al Novecento e alle rielaborazioni operate in ambito artistico. Nel primo capitolo viene ricostruita la storia dei tarocchi, evidenziandone le trasformazioni culturali e il passaggio da strumento ludico a dispositivo esoterico e artistico. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sugli arcani maggiori, interpretati come archetipi universali in continua evoluzione, con un’analisi specifica del tema della figura femminile e degli arcani che rientrano in questa categoria. Il terzo capitolo è dedicato alla biografia e alla formazione di due artiste che hanno contribuito alla reinterpretazione del tarocco in chiave moderna, mettendo in luce il rapporto tra esperienza personale, linguaggio artistico e simbologia esoterica. Infine, il quarto capitolo propone un confronto tra l’uso del tarocco in pittura e in scultura, attraverso l’analisi di due casi emblematici: i tarocchi surrealisti di Leonora Carrington e il Giardino dei Tarocchi di Niki de Saint Phalle, situato a Capalbio, in Toscana. Attraverso un’analisi storico-artistica e iconografica, la tesi intende dimostrare come il tarocco, nel contesto contemporaneo, si configuri come un bene culturale complesso, capace di coniugare dimensione simbolica, creativa e spaziale, offrendo nuove prospettive per la sua tutela e valorizzazione. Il lavoro deriva dall’analisi di due specifici casi di studio messi a confronto e si propone come strumento utile per comprendere le trasformazioni della società nel corso dei secoli, con particolare riferimento al ventesimo e al ventunesimo secolo.
