Carmine Pecorelli: informazione e potere nell'Italia della Prima Repubblica

The thesis analyses the figure of Carmine “Mino” Pecorelli and the role played by his periodical Osservatore Politico within the political-institutional dynamics of Italy between the 1960s and 1970s. By examining the historical context of the First Republic, the work reconstructs the relationship between information, state apparatus, and centers of power in a phase marked by political tensions, destabilization strategies, and transformations of the media system. Particular attention is paid to the birth and evolution of Op, the methods of collecting and disseminating “confidential news”, and the network of relationships built by Pecorelli with political, military, Masonic, and secret service circles. From this perspective, the research highlights how the journalist's activity was not limited to the simple publication of information, but was placed in an ambiguous space in which news also became an instrument of pressure, mediation, and conflict between different sectors of power. The paper also addresses the relationship between Pecorelli and some of the main events in the history of the Republic, with particular reference to the Moro case, the system of relations between politics and intelligence, and the events linked to the P2 Masonic lodge. A specific section is dedicated to the journalist's murder, judicial investigations, and subsequent trials, highlighting the difficulties that emerged in reconstructing the story. Finally, the thesis reflects on the historical legacy of the Pecorelli case and the significance assumed by his figure in contemporary public and historiographical debate.

La tesi analizza la figura di Carmine “Mino” Pecorelli e il ruolo svolto dal suo periodico Osservatore Politico all’interno delle dinamiche politico-istituzionali dell’Italia tra gli anni Sessanta e Settanta. Attraverso l’esame del contesto storico della Prima Repubblica, il lavoro ricostruisce il rapporto tra informazione, apparati dello Stato e centri di potere in una fase segnata da tensioni politiche, strategie di destabilizzazione e trasformazioni del sistema mediatico. Particolare attenzione è dedicata alla nascita e all’evoluzione di Op, alle modalità di raccolta e diffusione delle “notizie riservate” e alla rete di relazioni costruita da Pecorelli con ambienti politici, militari, massonici e dei servizi segreti. In tale prospettiva, la ricerca evidenzia come l’attività del giornalista non si limitasse alla semplice pubblicazione di informazioni, ma si collocasse in uno spazio ambiguo in cui la notizia diventava anche strumento di pressione, mediazione e conflitto tra differenti settori del potere. L’elaborato affronta inoltre il rapporto tra Pecorelli e alcuni dei principali eventi della storia repubblicana, con particolare riferimento al caso Moro, al sistema delle relazioni tra politica e intelligence e alle vicende legate alla loggia massonica P2. Una sezione specifica è dedicata all’omicidio del giornalista, alle indagini giudiziarie e ai processi successivi, mettendo in luce le difficoltà emerse nella ricostruzione della vicenda. Infine, la tesi riflette sull’eredità storica del caso Pecorelli e sul significato assunto dalla sua figura nel dibattito pubblico e storiografico contemporaneo.
