This thesis explores the introduction of biology in preschool education through a laboratory-based teaching approach grounded in a simplified scientific method. In particular, the research investigates the possibility of addressing the topic of human senses with three-year-old children, considering the existence of a number of senses greater than the five traditionally recognized. The three objectives of the research are: to assess three-year-olds' ability to recognize and understand the nine human senses; to analyze teachers' perceptions and teaching methodologies regarding scientific topics; and to deepen their knowledge of the topic of the human senses. To pursue these objectives, a teaching program was designed and implemented with a homogeneous group of 19 three-year-old children from the Comprehensive School “Ungaretti” in Altissimo (Vicenza), in which the nine human senses were introduced through laboratory activities structured in phases of hypothesis, experimentation, and conclusions. A questionnaire was also administered to teachers from different preschools. The findings highlight that introducing the topic of the nine human senses in preschool education is possible through methodologies capable of stimulating reflection, curiosity, and children’s participation. The analysis of the questionnaire data also reveals teachers' willingness to address scientific topics, although this is accompanied by fears and uncertainties related to the complexity of the topics, poor teacher preparation, and methodological choices. The research suggests that the obstacles to introducing such scientific content do not lie in children's age, but in teachers' beliefs and fears.
La presente tesi esplora l’introduzione della biologia nella scuola dell’infanzia attraverso una didattica laboratoriale basata su un metodo scientifico semplificato. In particolare, la ricerca indaga la possibilità di affrontare il tema dei sensi umani con bambini di tre anni, considerando l’esistenza di un numero di sensi superiore ai cinque tradizionalmente riconosciuti. I tre obiettivi della ricerca sono: verificare la capacità dei bambini di tre anni di riconoscere e comprendere i nove sensi umani; analizzare la percezione e le metodologie didattiche degli insegnanti rispetto agli argomenti scientifici; approfondire le loro conoscenze sul tema dei sensi umani. Per perseguire tali obiettivi è stato progettato e realizzato un percorso didattico rivolto a una sezione omogenea composta da 19 bambini di 3 anni dell’Istituto Comprensivo “Ungaretti” di Altissimo (Vicenza), nel quale i nove sensi umani sono stati presentati attraverso interventi laboratoriali strutturati in fasi di ipotesi, sperimentazione e conclusioni. È stato inoltre somministrato un questionario a insegnanti di diverse scuole dell’infanzia. I risultati evidenziano come l’introduzione del tema dei nove sensi umani nella scuola dell’infanzia sia possibile attraverso metodologie capaci di stimolare riflessione, curiosità e partecipazione dei bambini. Dall’analisi dei dati del questionario emerge inoltre la volontà degli insegnanti di proporre tematiche scientifiche, accompagnata tuttavia da timori e incertezze legati alla complessità degli argomenti, alla loro scarsa preparazione e alle scelte metodologiche. La ricerca suggerisce che gli ostacoli all’introduzione di tali contenuti scientifici non risiedano nell’età dei bambini, bensì nelle convinzioni e nelle paure degli insegnanti.
