This study examines the relationship between sports participation and mental health among adolescents aged 14 to 17, using microdata from the ISTAT "Aspects of Daily Life" (AVQ) survey, 2023 edition. The main objective is to assess whether higher frequency of sports practice is associated with better psychological wellbeing, measured through the synthetic mental health index MH derived from the SF-36 questionnaire. The sample consists of 1545 adolescents. The dependent variable was dichotomized using the median as a threshold and analyzed through logistic regression models, controlling for a broad set of individual, behavioral and family characteristics. Results show that adolescents who practice sport frequently have significantly higher odds of reaching elevated mental health levels compared to less active peers, even after controlling for confounding factors. Gender, perceived physical health, alcohol consumption and parental mental health also emerge as significant predictors. The study contributes to the understanding of protective factors for adolescent mental health, highlighting the potential role of sport as a resource for psychological wellbeing.
