In recent years, financial markets have proven increasingly sensitive not only to shocks of an economic nature, but also and above all to those of a political and geopolitical origin, capable of rapidly altering the level of uncertainty perceived by market participants and of generating significant repercussions on the main market indices. In this context, the present work aims to assess whether the introduction of the trade tariffs announced by the Trump administration on 2 April 2025, on the occasion of the so-called Liberation Day, produced a lasting structural change in the statistical properties of the main financial and macroeconomic series of the United States and the European Union, or whether it manifested itself only as a short-lived shock. To this end, after introducing the theoretical framework of market risk and Value at Risk and reconstructing the historical and geopolitical context of tariff policies, a pre-post empirical analysis is conducted on the log-returns of the S&P 500 and EuroStoxx 50 indices, on the changes in the CPI and HICP, and on the EFFR and MRO policy rates over the period 2022–2025. The comparison between the two subperiods is carried out by means of F-tests and Student's and Welch's t-tests, supplemented by the analysis of the rolling standard deviation and the computation of historical Value at Risk. The results show that the shock generated by the tariffs was acute and intense, but short-lived: the markets rapidly absorbed the initial impact, while the more persistent signals emerge in the extreme tails of the return distribution and in the European macroeconomic dynamics, where the transmission of trade tensions manifested itself through more indirect but potentially more lasting channels.

Abstract

The Impact of United States Trade Tariffs on the Financial Markets of the U.S. and the European Union – An Event Study Analysis
