In recent years, social media have profoundly changed the way people seek and consume health information. TikTok, in particular, has established itself as one of the most influential environments for younger generations: short-form content, immediacy, and powerful algorithmic logic make it a space where certain topics, such as those related to mental health, circulate massively and often beyond the control of scientific sources. This thesis grows out of an interest in what happens when conditions like ADHD and autism become the subject of viral communication. How are they talked about? Who speaks and how? What kind of knowledge is built through these contents? The aim is to understand how TikTok contributes to shaping perceptions and representations of mental health, with particular attention to the dynamics of simplification, identification, and self-diagnosis that characterize these spaces. On the theoretical side, the work moves between health communication, media sociology and digital pedagogy, with a focus on the concept of digital health literacy, understood as the skills needed to search for, evaluate and critically use health information online. The specific features of TikTok as a platform are also examined: the role of algorithms, virality, and the tensions between accessibility and accuracy. This theoretical reflection is complemented by an empirical analysis of TikTok content on ADHD and autism, to concretely observe how these topics are staged on the platform. The thesis concludes by considering the growing importance of digital health literacy today and how necessary it is to learn to navigate a health information ecosystem that is increasingly chaotic and varied.

Abstract

Are you ADHD or is it your feed? TikTok and digital health literacy between trends and self-diagnosis in the algorithmic era
Come vengono raccontate? Chi parla e come?
