The objective of this thesis is to investigate the thermofluid-dynamic and performance evolution of the single-stage turbocharger in Formula 1, comparing three pivotal eras: the pioneering debut in the 1970s, the introduction of hybrid Power Units in 2014, and the current state-of-the-art engines. The investigation begins with an examination of computational models for turbo-engine matching, distinguishing between the phenomenological model approach, based on global parameters, and the precision of gas-dynamic models for the study of pulsating flows. The estimation of the turbine inlet temperature ( ) is analyzed in depth as a critical parameter for both the energy balance and the protection of the components. A central focus is dedicated to the transient response, where the analysis of the turbo-group's equations of motion provides an understanding of the evolution of turbo-lag reduction strategies: from mechanical management via the wastegate valve to the introduction of the MGU-H system, which has redefined the concept of energy efficiency and race-derived road propulsion. Finally, the study addresses the critical issues related to mechanical and thermal stresses induced by high brake mean effective pressures (BMEP), evaluating the impact of turbocharging on the structural robustness of components and the formation of pollutant emissions. This work demonstrates how the coupling of theoretical modeling and technological innovation has enabled the overcoming of the historical limits of turbocharging, outlining the technical prospects for the future regulations of the pinnacle of motorsport.
