This thesis aims to analyze the static stability of delta-wing aircraft, with particular reference to the case of the Space Shuttle. In the first part, the theoretical foundations of aircraft static stability are reviewed in order to provide the conceptual framework necessary for the subsequent analyses. The main characteristics of delta-wing configurations are then introduced, highlighting their distinctive aerodynamic features, operational advantages, and critical aspects, with particular attention to their implications for aircraft stability. The central part of the work is dedicated to the study of the Space Shuttle, considered as a representative application case. The analysis focuses in particular on the atmospheric reentry and landing phases, in which the delta-wing configuration, combined with high angles of attack and varying aerodynamic conditions, significantly influences the static behavior of the vehicle. The objective of this work is to provide an overall assessment of the static stability characteristics of the Space Shuttle under the different flight conditions considered, contributing to the understanding of the role of delta-wing configurations in the aerospace field.
La presente tesi si propone di analizzare la stabilità statica dei velivoli ad ala a delta, con particolare riferimento al caso dello Space Shuttle. Nella prima parte vengono richiamati i fondamenti teorici della stabilità statica degli aeromobili, al fine di fornire il quadro concettuale necessario per le successive analisi. Vengono quindi introdotte le principali caratteristiche delle configurazioni ad ala a delta, evidenziandone gli aspetti aerodinamici peculiari, i vantaggi operativi e le criticità, con particolare attenzione alle implicazioni sulla stabilità del velivolo. La parte centrale del lavoro è dedicata allo studio dello Space Shuttle, considerato come caso applicativo rappresentativo. L’analisi si concentra in particolare sulle fasi di rientro atmosferico e atterraggio, nelle quali la configurazione ad ala a delta, unita agli elevati angoli d’attacco e alle condizioni aerodinamiche variabili, influisce in maniera significativa sul comportamento statico del veicolo. L’obiettivo del lavoro è fornire una valutazione complessiva delle caratteristiche di stabilità statica dello Space Shuttle nelle diverse condizioni di volo considerate, contribuendo alla comprensione del ruolo delle configurazioni ad ala a delta in ambito aerospaziale.
