La costruzione mediatica del terrore: la narrazione dell’11 settembre nella stampa italiana

This thesis examines the relationship between terrorism, the media, and the construction of public narrative through an analysis of the September 11, 2001, attacks in the Italian press. The research focuses on a comparison between Corriere della Sera and L’Unità, two daily newspapers characterized by different historical and editorial profiles and political orientations. Following a historical reconstruction of the attacks and their main consequences, the study explores the relationship between terrorism and communication, focusing on the role of the media in the representation of violence, the sensationalization of terror, and the symbolic construction of the enemy. The core of the thesis consists of a comparative and diachronic analysis of a corpus of articles published between September 12 and October 11, 2001. Through the study of headlines, images, lexical choices, and interpretive frameworks, the research demonstrates how the Italian press contributed to transforming September 11 from a historical event into a public narrative, highlighting the interpretive nature of journalism.

La presente tesi esamina il rapporto tra terrorismo, media e costruzione della narrazione pubblica attraverso l’analisi degli attentati dell’11 settembre 2001 nella stampa italiana. La ricerca si concentra sul confronto tra il Corriere della Sera e L’Unità, due quotidiani caratterizzati da differenti profili storico-editoriali e orientamenti politici. Dopo una ricostruzione storica degli attacchi e delle loro principali conseguenze, il lavoro approfondisce il rapporto tra terrorismo e comunicazione, soffermandosi sul ruolo dei media nella rappresentazione della violenza, nella spettacolarizzazione del terrore e nella costruzione simbolica del nemico. Il nucleo centrale della tesi è costituito dall’analisi comparativa e diacronica di un corpus di articoli pubblicati tra il 12 settembre e l’11 ottobre 2001. Attraverso lo studio di titoli, immagini, scelte lessicali e cornici interpretative, la ricerca mostra come la stampa italiana abbia contribuito a trasformare l’11 settembre da evento storico a racconto pubblico, evidenziando la natura interpretativa del giornalismo.
