The thesis examines Edward Said’s thought with a focus on the theme of the intellectual’s responsibility toward power, understood as a critical, ethical, and democratic practice. The analysis pays particular attention to Said’s contribution to postcolonial studies, especially his critique of Western cultural narratives about the Other; to his relationship with the humanistic tradition and the idea of “democratic criticism”; and, finally, to the Palestinian question, examined as an emblematic space of Said’s intellectual engagement.
