Da Madame Chrysanthème a Madama Butterfly: Pierre Loti, Giacomo Puccini e il Giapponismo

This thesis investigates the journey leading from Pierre Loti's Madame Chrysanthème (1887) to Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly (1904), situating this textual itinerary within the cultural climate of Japonisme, the fashion for the art and imagery of the Land of the Rising Sun that swept through Europe and the United States between the second half of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.

La presente tesi indaga il percorso che conduce da Madame Chrysanthème (1887) di Pierre Loti a Madama Butterfly (1904) di Giacomo Puccini, inserendo questo itinerario testuale all’interno della temperie culturale del giapponismo, ovvero la moda per l’arte e l’immaginario del Sol Levante che ha attraversato l’Europa e gli Stati Uniti tra la seconda metà dell’Ottocento e l’inizio del Novecento.
