This dissertation investigates the role of Extramural English in informal language learning, with particular attention to audiovisual content and online platforms as sources of language exposure. The study focuses on the difference between formal English learning, mainly connected to school and university instruction, and informal exposure to English through everyday activities such as films, TV series, music, social media, YouTube, videogames and digital platforms. The theoretical part of the dissertation introduces the concepts of formal and informal language learning and defines Extramural English as contact with English outside the classroom. It then discusses the main forms of extramural contact, with a specific focus on audiovisual input, films and TV series, subtitles, social media and online platforms. The empirical part is based on an anonymous questionnaire designed to investigate participants’ habits, experiences and perceptions of English exposure outside formal education. The aim of the study is to understand how learners perceive the influence of informal contact with English on their language development, especially in relation to vocabulary, listening comprehension, pronunciation, motivation and confidence. The dissertation also considers how extramural exposure may complement, rather than replace, formal English instruction.

The dissertation also considers how extramural exposure may complement, rather than replace, formal English instruction.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
