This work investigated how Italian speakers perceive lies, that is, on the basis of which semantic cues they recognize, or do not recognize, different types of inaccurate statements as such. The study was inspired by Coleman and Kay's (1981) research on speakers of American English, and by Harding's (2010) replication of the same on Ecuadorian Spanish-speaking speakers, according to which, prototypically, a lie is characterized by three elements: the objective falsity of the utterance, awareness of the falsity of the utterance, and the intention to deceive one's interlocutor. In the first phase of the work, 32 participants, aged between 20 and 37 and equally distributed by gender, were administered a questionnaire of eight sketches involving two or more interlocutors, each containing an inaccurate statement to be rated on a scale of 1 to 7, justifying the assigned rating with a comment. This is with the aim of understanding whether Italian speakers conceive of lies prototypically, and if so, which of the three elements they consider most relevant for labeling an inaccurate statement as a lie. In the second phase of the work, an interview was conducted with two participants selected from the proposed questionnaire, a male and a female, structured into 7 open-ended questions: after the first theoretical question, the remaining ones presented sketches of everyday life in which one of the interlocutors uttered a statement that could potentially be defined as a lie that the interviewees had to judge. This is with the aim of analyzing the perception of lies of Italian speakers with a more qualitative approach. The starting hypothesis was that, for Italian speakers, the most relevant element of the prototypical lie was the intention to deceive, unlike what was found by Coleman and Kay (1981) and by Harding (2010), who had identified awareness of the falsity of the statement as the most important element for their respective participants. The data collected from the questionnaire show that the lie and the prototypical truth were recognized as such by the majority of participants; that, as the elements characterizing the prototypical lie contained in the skits increased, they were rated with a greater perception of their lying status; and that the intention to deceive is the element perceived as most relevant for classifying an inaccurate statement as a lie, while it is not possible to establish a hierarchy of importance between the remaining two. Similarly, the data obtained from the interview also confirm that the intention to deceive is considered fundamental to defining an inaccurate statement as a lie. Furthermore, these reveal that the same criteria are not used to judge a lie as such; that lies told for good are not perceived in the same way; that divergent judgments emerge regarding its classification as a lie in the omission of the truth; and that a promise not kept due to unpredictable circumstances is not considered a lie. The study suggests, therefore, that the semantic prototype of the lie developed by Coleman and Kay (1981) is also found in Italian speakers, who give greater importance to the intention to deceive than the other two elements, and that the motivation and context in which an inaccurate statement is expressed have a decisive impact on evaluating it, or not, as a lie.

Abstract

This work investigated how Italian speakers perceive lies, that is, on the basis of which semantic cues they recognize, or do not recognize, different types of inaccurate statements as such. The study was inspired by Coleman and Kay's (1981) research on speakers of American English, and by Harding's (2010) replication of the same on Ecuadorian Spanish-speaking speakers, according to which, prototypically, a lie is characterized by three elements: the objective falsity of the utterance, awareness of the falsity of the utterance, and the intention to deceive one's interlocutor. The telling signs of lying: a semantic study on Italian speakers' perception of different types of inaccurate statements
