The aim of this thesis is to explore the representation of Ottoman women in two travel narratives, Turkish Embassy Letters (1763) by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Haremlik: Some Pages from the Life of Oriental Women (1909) by Demetra Vaka Brown, in the light of Edward Said’s Orientalism. Focusing on two travel writers from different historical periods, this thesis seeks to explore the ways through which both travel writers simultaneously resist and reproduce Orientalist discourse. It is argued that although both Montagu and Vaka Brown state their intentions to provide a more authentic and sympathetic account of Ottoman society and shatter prevailing stereotypical representations of women, their narratives nevertheless remain informed by Orientalist discourse they attempt to transcend. In this respect, this thesis contends that both travel writers rely on established Orientalist modes of representation, constructing the East as an extraordinary, fascinating, and culturally distinct space while reproducing the romanticised and exotic image of Ottoman women that had long shaped European perceptions of the Orient. Therefore, by comparing these two texts, separated by almost two centuries, this thesis argues that Montagu and Vaka Brown were unable to fully escape Orientalist discourse.
