This thesis aims to provide an overview of the figure of the Byzantine general Belisarius in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. My research has led me to consult various sources and works, which I have attempted to organize into three chapters as follows. The first chapter will examine the figure of Belisarius from a historical perspective, establishing certain facts and analyzing the sources available to Dante to construct the portrait of the general he offers in Canto VI. The second chapter will focus on an analysis of the Divine Comedy and the verses I have chosen as the basis for my research. The third chapter will examine the ancient commentaries on the Paradiso and what each of them says (or does not say) about Belisarius.

Abstract
This thesis aims to provide an overview of the figure of the Byzantine general Belisarius in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. My research has led me to consult various sources and works, which I have attempted to organize into three chapters as follows. The first chapter will examine the figure of Belisarius from a historical perspective, establishing certain facts and analyzing the sources available to Dante to construct the portrait of the general he offers in Canto VI. The second chapter will focus on an analysis of the Divine Comedy and the verses I have chosen as the basis for my research. The third chapter will examine the ancient commentaries on the Paradiso and what each of them says (or does not say) about Belisarius.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
