Kobane Calling. Rappresentare il conflitto siriano tra storia contemporanea e graphic journalism

The thesis analyzes Zerocalcare's “Kobane Calling" as an example of graphic journalism. It investigates the relationship between historical narrative, testimony and the language of comics. After reconstructing the historical and political context of Syria, with particular attention to the Kurdish question, Rojava, and the war against ISIS, the paper examines the characteristics of graphic journalism and the role of comics as a tool for disseminating and narrating reality. The final chapter is devoted to the stylistic, aesthetic and narrative analysis of “Kobane Calling”. The strategies through which Zerocalcare intertwines irony, autobiography, and testimony to represent a complex conflict are highlighted. The research aims to show how comics can be an effective means of interpreting contemporary history and building collective memory.

La tesi analizza “Kobane Calling" di Zerocalcare come esempio di graphic journalism. Indaga il rapporto tra narrazione storica, testimonianza e linguaggio del fumetto. Dopo aver ricostruito il contesto storico e politico della Siria, con particolare attenzione alla questione curda, al Rojava e alla guerra contro l'ISIS, il lavoro esamina le caratteristiche del graphic journalism e il ruolo del fumetto come strumento di divulgazione e racconto della realtà. L'ultimo capitolo è dedicato all'analisi stilistica, estetica e narrativa di “Kobane Calling”. Si evidenziano le strategie attraverso cui Zerocalcare intreccia ironia, autobiografia e testimonianza per rappresentare un conflitto complesso. La ricerca intende mostrare come il fumetto possa essere un mezzo efficace per interpretare la storia contemporanea e costruire la memoria collettiva.
