This study analyzes the cinema of Paul Thomas Anderson, an American director born in 1970 in the San Fernando Valley and regarded as one of the most original and significant voices in contemporary film. The thesis comprises three main chapters. The first provides a comprehensive overview of Anderson’s artistic trajectory, examining his biography, cinematic influences, recurring themes, stylistic evolution, and relationship with visual and narrative space. The second and third chapters are dedicated to an in-depth analysis of two films representing distinct phases of his career: Magnolia (1999) and There Will Be Blood (2007). These two titles trace the path of an auteur who has successfully reinvented himself while maintaining a clear thematic consistency centered on family, loneliness, power, and the weight of the past. The research draws upon a variety of sources, including critical articles, interviews with the director, and monographs, all of which are documented in the final bibliography; the study of these materials has enabled an original analysis that goes beyond mere filmographic description. The thesis aims to demonstrate that Anderson represents an exemplary case of an auteur capable of combining visual ambition with narrative depth in contemporary American cinema.
