Tourism today represents one of the fundamental pillars of the global economy, generating income, employment and promoting the cultural and natural heritage of the territories. This thesis aims to analyze the dynamics of the tourism phenomenon and the most effective strategies for destination management. In particular, the focus is on the Piedmontese context, with a focus on the specific cases of Varallo and Valsesia, in order to identify targeted Destination Management and Destination Marketing interventions to foster the potential tourism development of the area. The first chapter addresses the topic of tourism from a historical and economic perspective, examining its evolution, main definitions, and typologies. The characteristics of tourism at both the international and national levels are explored in depth and sectoral public policies are presented. The section concludes by analyzing the impact of contemporary geopolitics on global tourism flows. The second chapter focuses on the dynamics of tourist destinations. The push and pull factors that guide tourists' choices are explored, along with an analysis of the different types of destinations and their life cycle. Particular attention is paid to destination management and promotion tools: Destination Management Plans (DMPs), Destination Management Organizations (DMOs), and territorial branding strategies are explored as essential tools for building a solid and attractive image. The third chapter focuses on the tourism system of the Piedmont region. It outlines the territorial landscape, analyses trends in tourist flows and describes the institutional organisation of the sector. In the fourth chapter, the specificity of the Varallo and Valsesia destination is examined. After outlining a historical and evolutionary picture of the area, we analyze local tourism resources, current supply, organizational structures dedicated to tourism, and the characteristics of current demand. At the conclusion of the chapter, a SWOT Analysis identifies the strengths, critical issues, opportunities and threats related to the tourism development of the area. Finally, the fifth chapter collects a series of strategies proposed in the field of Destination Management and Destination Marketing to improve the attractiveness and tourism competitiveness of Varallo and Valsesia. These strategies focus on enhancing the cultural, historical and environmental heritage, promoting sustainable tourism and encouraging collaboration between various local actors. Through this complex analytical path, the thesis aims to demonstrate how careful strategic planning combined with integrated management of land resources can represent a driving force for the sustainable growth of destinations with high potential, both culturally and landscape-wise, such as the Valsesian territory.
