This thesis examines the management and development of tourist destinations, exploring the main theoretical aspects of tourism and destination management and applying them to the case study of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni (Asiago Plateau). The first part outlines the evolution of tourism as a phenomenon, focusing on international and national tourism trends, the role of Online Travel Agencies (OTA), the phenomenon of overtourism, tourism development policies, and the effects of the current geopolitical context. Subsequently, the concepts of tourist destination, destination management, and destination marketing are analysed, with particular attention to the planning and governance tools used in destination management. The research then focuses on the Veneto tourism system, examining its tourism offer, visitor flows, and regional regulatory and strategic framework. The case study of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni provides an in-depth analysis of the destination’s characteristics, resources, organisational structure, and the evolution of its territorial governance, through a SWOT analysis and the study of tourism data. Based on the critical issues and opportunities identified, the thesis proposes strategies and operational actions aimed at improving the competitiveness, governance, and enhancement of the destination, with the objective of promoting sustainable tourism development while preserving the territory’s distinctive characteristics.
