The aim of this thesis is to apply the tools and the skills acquired during the "Fundamentals of Automatic Control" course, in order to analyze and model the physical system of a hard disk drive (HDD) head and, subsequently, to design a positioning control system for it during data reading and writing operations. The goal is to ensure both high precision and high speed in the head's movement, while minimizing the effects of possible disturbances. In the first part of the work, we yield a meaningful input-output model to describe the system in a simple and faithful to reality way. From this model, the transfer function is derived, followed by an open-loop system analysis, with the study of its stability, step response and Bode and Nyquist plots. In the second part, after establishing the desired time-domain control specifications — steady-state error, settling time and overshoot — and converting them into the frequency-domain — thus, pole multiplicity at the origin, crossover frequency and phase margin — the controller synthesis is performed. A technique used to reject sinusoidal disturbances within a specific frequency range is also addressed. In particular, a controller consisting of three lead compensators is designed using the procedures learned during the course. In the work, we want to deal with both theoretical and practical aspects, using MATLAB simulations, in order to obtain in the end a performing and robust control system.

Abstract
In the work, we want to deal with both theoretical and practical aspects, using MATLAB simulations, in order to obtain in the end a performing and robust control system.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
