Cruise control systems are a classic application of automatic control in the automotive field, aimed at regulating vehicle speed without direct driver intervention on the accelerator. This thesis compares two control techniques applied to this problem: the PID controller, the standard solution in industrial practice, and Model Predictive Control (MPC), which determines the control action by solving a constrained optimisation problem over a prediction horizon at each step. After formulating the control problem and deriving the vehicle model, the structure of the two controllers is described in detail, with particular emphasis on the different way each handles the constraint on the traction force. The comparison is completed by MATLAB/Simulink simulations, which assess reference tracking and the rejection of a road-grade disturbance.

Abstract
Cruise control systems are a classic application of automatic control in the automotive field, aimed at regulating vehicle speed without direct driver intervention on the accelerator. This thesis compares two control techniques applied to this problem: the PID controller, the standard solution in industrial practice, and Model Predictive Control (MPC), which determines the control action by solving a constrained optimisation problem over a prediction horizon at each step. After formulating the control problem and deriving the vehicle model, the structure of the two controllers is described in detail, with particular emphasis on the different way each handles the constraint on the traction force. The comparison is completed by MATLAB/Simulink simulations, which assess reference tracking and the rejection of a road-grade disturbance.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
