This thesis analyzes the role of heat pumps as a key technology for the energy retrofitting of buildings, focusing particularly on technical, energy-related, and environmental aspects. After describing the operating principle of the heat pump and the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, the study outlines the key parameters characterizing their performance, highlighting their high efficiency compared to traditional heating systems. Subsequently, the thesis examines the contribution of heat pumps to building energy retrofitting, demonstrating how their use can reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, especially when combined with adequate building envelope insulation. Through practical examples and comparisons with conventional systems, the benefits regarding energy efficiency and environmental sustainability are highlighted. Finally, the thesis analyzes the main challenges that may hinder the widespread adoption of this technology, such as the characteristics of the existing building stock, initial installation costs, the need for system upgrades, and performance fluctuations due to varying climatic conditions. The analysis concludes that heat pumps represent an effective solution for the energy transition of the building sector, provided they are integrated into appropriately designed retrofitting projects.
