This thesis analyses the behaviour of thick beams using Timoshenko beam theory, with particular attention to the influence of shear deformation on structural response. After reviewing the fundamental principles of classical Bernoulli beam theory and Saint-Venant’s principle, the limitations of traditional models when applied to structural elements with low slenderness are highlighted. The aim is to identify the differences between the Bernoulli–Euler model and the Timoshenko model, showing how the contribution of shear deformation becomes significant as the slenderness of the beam decreases. The comparison makes it possible to determine the fields of applicability of the different models and to emphasise the importance of Timoshenko beam theory in the analysis of thick beams.

Abstract
This thesis analyses the behaviour of thick beams using Timoshenko beam theory, with particular attention to the influence of shear deformation on structural response. After reviewing the fundamental principles of classical Bernoulli beam theory and Saint-Venant’s principle, the limitations of traditional models when applied to structural elements with low slenderness are highlighted. The aim is to identify the differences between the Bernoulli–Euler model and the Timoshenko model, showing how the contribution of shear deformation becomes significant as the slenderness of the beam decreases. The comparison makes it possible to determine the fields of applicability of the different models and to emphasise the importance of Timoshenko beam theory in the analysis of thick beams.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
