The ocellated wrasse (Symphodus ocellatus) is a marine fish belonging to the family Labridae, primarily distributed throughout the Mediterranean Sea. This species is particularly interesting for the study of reproductive behaviour due to the presence of different alternative strategies adopted by males during the breeding season. Within the same population, three distinct male morphs are present: nesting males, which build and defend the nest and provide obligatory parental care; satellite males, which participate in nest defence but actively compete for fertilizations; and sneaker males, which use opportunistic parasitic strategies to achieve reproductive success. This compilation thesis analyses the biology of S. ocellatus and its reproductive system, focusing on the behavioural and evolutionary mechanisms regulating intra- and intersexual interactions, while examining the physiological adaptations driven by sperm competition. The role of females is also analysed, as their choice of both the nest in which to lay their eggs and the mating male is influenced by the assessment of the risk that the nesting male may abandon the nest. The study of this species therefore provides valuable insight into the relationship between behaviour, sexual selection, and the evolution of reproductive strategies in Mediterranean marine fishes, with particular reference to the Labridae.
