The growing focus on environmental sustainability has led to the development of biodegradable materials as a possible alternative to traditional food containers made from petrochemical plastics. This thesis analyzes the main characteristics of biodegradable materials used in the food packaging sector, with particular attention to their composition, mechanical and barrier properties, food-contact safety, and ability to degrade under specific environmental conditions. The main bioplastics used, such as PLA, PHA, starch, and cellulose, are also considered, highlighting their advantages, application limits, and future prospects. The aim is to evaluate the role of these materials in reducing the environmental impact of food packaging while maintaining adequate standards of preservation, quality, and product safety.
