Hydrofoils represent one of the most innovative applications of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics in the naval engineering field, thanks to their ability to generate hydrodynamic lift and reduce drag, thereby improving the efficiency and performance of watercraft. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the aerodynamic behavior of hydrofoil profiles through the study of the fundamental principles of fluid mechanics and thin airfoil theory. Following an introductory overview of the main characteristics and applications of hydrofoils, the fundamental concepts of ideal and real fluids, Bernoulli’s equation, aerodynamic coefficients, and the influence of the Reynolds number on airfoil behavior are presented. The thesis then examines the geometric and aerodynamic characteristics of airfoils, analyzing the relationships between lift, drag, and angle of attack, with particular emphasis on thin airfoil theory as a reference model for predicting airfoil performance. Finally, the discussion focuses on the main applications of hydrofoils, the most common design configurations, and the physical phenomena that affect their performance, including stall, boundary layer separation, and cavitation, highlighting the main design implications and future development prospects of this technology.

Abstract
Finally, the discussion focuses on the main applications of hydrofoils, the most common design configurations, and the physical phenomena that affect their performance, including stall, boundary layer separation, and cavitation, highlighting the main design implications and future development prospects of this technology.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
