The following paper analyses the onset of cavitation on a foil wing inspired by an America’s Cup yacht and modelled using Autodesk Fusion 360. By applying the XFLR5 simulation software, it was subsequently possible to determine the pressure distribution across all the different two-dimensional profiles constituting the hydrodynamic surface under investigation. The subsequent data analysis, combined with the introduction of two completely different environmental scenarios – Barcelona and Auckland – made it possible to determine the critical trigger velocity for the formation of cavitation bubbles. Further numerical analyses of the fluid dynamic parameters then demonstrated that the critical condition associated with cavitation occurs earlier as sea temperature and the hydrofoil’s angle of attack increase, whilst it occurs later as operating depth increases. On the other hand, subsequent studies have shown that such a difference, linked to the two different racing conditions, is not present in a fully developed cavitation regime. In conclusion, it is clear that a two-phase CFD analysis or experimental testing in a water tunnel is undoubtedly necessary in order to accurately validate the results obtained.

Abstract
In conclusion, it is clear that a two-phase CFD analysis or experimental testing in a water tunnel is undoubtedly necessary in order to accurately validate the results obtained.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
