The choice of material used to manufacture the chassis of a racing go-kart plays a crucial role in the vehicle’s performance, as it directly affects its overall weight and, consequently, its acceleration, fuel consumption, and handling on the track. This thesis aims to present the materials used in racing-kart chassis, in compliance with the technical regulations issued by the CIK-FIA (International Karting Commission), which are also applied in Italy through ACI Sport. The introductory section will focus on an overview of karting and its history, before examining the structure and function of the go-kart chassis. The main aspects of the CIK-FIA regulations will then be explained, with particular attention to the classification of karts into groups and the construction requirements imposed on the chassis, in order to identify the materials permitted for its manufacture. Subsequently, some of the steels most commonly used in chassis construction will be compared on the basis of their relevant mechanical properties: yield strength, Young’s modulus, ductility, and weldability. This comparison will make it possible to draw well-founded conclusions regarding which material may be most suitable for constructing a kart chassis, while balancing the requirements of safety, lightness, cost, and ease of manufacture.
