Background and objective: this work documents the operation of the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Codevigo (Padua) and analyzes its technological upgrade, focusing on the transition from a conventional activated sludge system to an IFAS (Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge) hybrid attached-growth biomass reactor, which took place in May 2024. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of this retrofitting in ensuring compliance with the stringent discharge limits imposed by the Veneto Regional Water Protection Plan dated November 5, 2009, thereby optimizing pollutant removal without increasing the volume of the existing biological compartments. Materials and methods: utilizing descriptive and inferential statistical tools, this study compares the effluent quality parameters considered during the design phase (BOD5, total N, and total P) and the overall purification performance of the plant during the ante-operam period (January–April 2024) against the same four-month post-operam period (January–April 2025). Each selected sample consists of 35 statistical units. The significance level designated for the hypothesis testing is set at 5%. Results: the introduction of the IFAS modules ensured a marked resilience of the biological process and an improvement in the removal efficiency of BOD5, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus by 2.35%, 8.11%, and 18.27%, respectively. Furthermore, their corresponding effluent values decreased by 75%, 33.44%, and 54.81%. Nevertheless, a deterioration was observed in the total effluent COD values, which increased by 85.63%, alongside a 2.69% reduction in its removal percentage; this was potentially caused by the cyclical sloughing of senescent biofilm from the carriers. Regardless, the water treatment in terms of COD broadly complies with the targets required by legislation. Conclusions: the IFAS technology successfully met the upgrading requirements of the Codevigo treatment plant.
