This thesis examines the effects of severe nutritional deprivation in war settings, focusing on the main pathophysiological mechanisms that develop in response to prolonged nutrient deficiency. After examining the consequences of armed conflicts on food availability and access to nutritional resources, the clinical manifestations of protein-energy malnutrition and the main metabolic adaptations implemented by the body are described, including the reduction of basal metabolic rate, the activation of muscle protein catabolism, and the metabolic alterations resulting from micronutrient deficiencies. The thesis then explores the relationship between malnutrition, immune function, and intestinal health, highlighting how immunosuppression and enteric infections contribute to the impairment of the intestinal barrier, worsening malabsorption and perpetuating the vicious cycle of malnutrition. Finally, the main nutritional intervention strategies are analysed, with particular attention to nutritional rehabilitation protocols aimed at restoring intestinal function, recovering lean body mass, and improving overall nutritional status.
