Artistic gymnastics is an aesthetic sport characterized by high technical and psychological demands, in which performance is constantly evaluated and compared to ideal standards. In this context, perfectionism and fear of failure (FF) are particularly relevant constructs, as they can influence both the performance and the well-being of female athletes. Among the most widely studied psychological resources in sports, mental toughness (MT) emerges as a key factor in managing competitive stress, maintaining attentional focus, and regulating emotional responses in the face of difficulties and errors. This observational study investigates the relationships between MT, FF, and dimensions of positive and negative perfectionism in a sample of 33 young gymnasts (ages 11–23) belonging to the Silver, Eccellenza, and Gold divisions of the Italian Gymnastics Federation (FGI). Data were collected using an anonymous questionnaire comprising validated scales for assessing the psychological constructs under investigation: Mental Toughness Index (MTI; Gucciardi et al., 2015), Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory - Short Form (PFAI-SF; Conroy et al., 2002), and the Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale (PNPS; Terry-Short et al., 1995). Contrary to initial hypotheses, the analysis did not reveal a significant association between MT and FF, nor between MT and the dimensions of perfectionism. However, significant correlations emerged between MT and years of practice (negative), between FF and training volume, between negative perfectionism and FF, and between the two perfectionism subscales. Post-hoc analyses also revealed significant differences in FF levels between the Gold category and the Eccellenza and Silver categories. The results, discussed in light of the existing literature, offer insights into the complexity of the psychological constructs investigated in the sports context.
