This thesis examines the crisis of local news in medium-sized Italian cities, focusing on the economic factors that have weakened the sustainability of traditional news outlets. Declining circulation and advertising revenues, together with the growing influence of digital platforms and social media, have undermined a business model historically based on print sales and local advertising. However, local journalism generates more than economic value: it contributes to collective identity, civic participation, and urban cohesion. The research explores the ability of certain local newspapers to preserve their independence and strong connection with their territories. Finally, the thesis considers alternative sustainability models based on revenue diversification, events, and a stronger relationship between local news organizations and their communities.

Abstract
This thesis examines the crisis of local news in medium-sized Italian cities, focusing on the economic factors that have weakened the sustainability of traditional news outlets. Declining circulation and advertising revenues, together with the growing influence of digital platforms and social media, have undermined a business model historically based on print sales and local advertising. However, local journalism generates more than economic value: it contributes to collective identity, civic participation, and urban cohesion. The research explores the ability of certain local newspapers to preserve their independence and strong connection with their territories. Finally, the thesis considers alternative sustainability models based on revenue diversification, events, and a stronger relationship between local news organizations and their communities.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
