This thesis aims to explore the perceptions and attitudes toward English among students (English speakers) of Pakistani and Indian descent living in Europe. Attitudes were identified through a questionnaire-based research. The research employs a quantitative approach by collecting data through a questionnaire using Google Forms. The entire questionnaire consisted of 19 questions/instructions divided into two sections. The first section included five multiple-choice questions, while the second section of the questionnaire included 13 Likert-type statements and 1 open-ended question. The first chapter focuses on the concept of the global spread of the English language as a result of the phenomena of globalization and colonialism, with particular attention to the impact of British colonialism on the Indian subcontinent. The notion of English as a Lingua Franca is also explained. In addition, the pioneering model proposed by Kachru that describes the distribution of English in relation to three concentric circles: the inner circle, the outer circle, and the expanding circle, is set forth. Each circle describes the type of diffusion, the learning pattern in which English is used across different cultures and languages. The second chapter focuses on the definition of attitude and provides facts about the situation of English in these two South Asian countries of interest. Next, it provides facts about the situation of English in these two South Asian countries (India and Pakistan). For each of the two countries, past studies and research by various scholars regarding the attitudes toward English of the residents of these countries are described. The third and final chapter contains an analysis of the questionnaire data. A general description of the research methodology and data collection opens the chapter, which then continues with a presentation of the results. It highlights the importance and attitudes respondents attribute to the English language and describes the motivation behind their desire to speak English. Finally, it delves into the colonial past in India and the current influence that the English language has on Indian/Pakistani culture and/or native language.
Questa tesi mira ad esplorare le percezioni e l’attitudine verso la lingua inglese degli studenti (parlanti lingua inglese) di origini pakistane e indiane che vivono in Europa. Le attitudine sono state individuate attraverso una ricerca basata su un questionario. La ricerca impiega un approccio quantitativo, raccogliendo i dati attraverso un questionario utilizzando Google Forms. L'intero questionario consisteva di 19 domande/istruzioni divise in due sezioni. La prima sezione comprendeva cinque domande a scelta multipla, mentre la seconda sezione del questionario comprendeva 13 affermazioni di tipo Likert e 1 domanda a risposta aperta. Il primo capitolo si concentra sul concetto di diffusione della lingua inglese a livello globale come conseguenza dei fenomeni di globalizzazione e colonialismo, con particolare attenzione all'impatto del colonialismo britannico sul subcontinente indiano. Viene inoltre spiegata la nozione di lingua inglese come Lingua Franca. In aggiunta, si espone il modello pionieristico proposto da Kachru che descrive la distribuzione dell'inglese in relazione a tre cerchi concentrici: il cerchio interno, il cerchio esterno e il cerchio in espansione. Ogni cerchio descrive il tipo di diffusione, il modello di apprendimento in cui la lingua inglese è usata nelle diverse culture e lingue. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sulla definizione dell'attitudine e fornisce fatti sulla situazione dell'inglese in questi due paesi di interesse dell'Asia meridionale. Successivamente, fornisce fatti sulla situazione dell'inglese in questi due paesi dell'Asia meridionale (India e Pakistan). Per ciascuno dei due paesi vengono descritti gli studi passati e le ricerche di diversi studiosi riguardanti l'atteggiamento verso l'inglese dei residenti di questi paesi. Il terzo e ultimo capitolo contiene l'analisi dei dati del questionario. Una descrizione generale della metodologia di ricerca e della raccolta dei dati apre il capitolo, che prosegue poi con la presentazione dei risultati. Evidenzia l'importanza e l'atteggiamento che gli intervistati attribuiscono alla lingua inglese e descrive la motivazione dietro il loro desiderio di parlare inglese. Infine, si approfondisce il passato coloniale in India e l'attuale influenza che la lingua inglese ha sulla cultura indiana/pakistana e/o sulla lingua madre.
