This thesis investigates the concept of "free labor" within the context of Karl Marx's critique of political economy, with particular reference to the first volume of "Capital". It explores the two senses in which the adjective "free" is understood: first, it analyzes the legal status of the free worker, tracing its ideological roots back to natural law theory and examining the employment contract mechanism within the dynamics of wage labor; subsequently, it highlights the material history of the separation between the worker and the means of production, therefore the origins of wage labor, with specific reference to the process of the primitive accumulation of capital.
