This thesis examines the issue of religious freedom within the Italian penitentiary system through an interdisciplinary approach that combines sociological and legal-constitutional perspectives. After exploring the role of religion in contemporary society and the legal framework protecting freedom of conscience and worship, the study focuses on the prison context, viewed as a setting in which the protection of fundamental rights assumes a particular importance. The empirical section is dedicated to a case study of the “Due Palazzi” Prison in Padua. Through document analysis and the collection of testimonies, the research aims to assess the extent to which religious freedom is effectively guaranteed and to investigate the role it may play in processes of resocialization, social reintegration, and the protection of inmates dignity.
