This thesis focuses on the fifth epistle of Ovid's Heroides and aims to examine the elegiac lament of the nymph Oenone following her abandonment by Paris through a series of comparative analyses. The study adopts two interpretative approaches, both grounded in the strongly intertextual nature of the epistle and intended to function in dialogue with one another within the critical reading of the text. The first approach explores the interaction between literary genres, interpreting Oenone's voice as the product of an encounter between pastoral poetry—the literary world to which she originally belongs—and elegy, the genre that frames the story of her relationship with Paris. In order to incorporate the nymph into the Heroides, however, Ovid must recast her character, reshaping the features that traditionally define her in the myth and adapting her to the literary economy of his collection. As a result, Oenone is no longer simply an abandoned nymph: she is forced to confront the world of heroic figures for which Paris has deserted her, she acquires a new rival in love, Helen, and appears compelled to question her own bucolic identity—still evident in her nostalgic recollection of the life she once shared with her former husband beneath the beech trees—in an attempt to win him back. This investigation of generic hybridity is based not only on an intratextual analysis of the fifth epistle but also on a dialogue between Oenone's voice and those of Paris and Helen. By placing Heroides V in dialogue with Heroides XVI and XVII, the thesis examines three competing subjective versions of the same events, which, in the absence of an authoritative narratorial voice, simultaneously challenge and illuminate one another. The second interpretative approach considers Oenone and Paris as representative figures within the nature-culture dichotomy. Beyond the interaction of literary genres, the epistle also conveys an implicit value judgment that emerges from Oenone's words, although she herself ultimately appears to question it. Taking into account the inherently subjective perspective offered by the epistolary form, the thesis investigates the extent to which Oenone's modest, simple—and therefore seemingly admirable—way of life can genuinely be opposed to the values of splendour, luxury, and the pursuit of pleasure that define the "new" Paris.

XVI e XVII.

Abstract

Ovid's Epistle of Oenone (Heroides V): between pastoral poetry and elegy.
